PokerNews Magazine - Issue 8 July/Aug 2010 (Australia) CURRENT ISSUE

PokerNews Magazine: Australia's number 1 poker magazine covering all the poker news from Australia, New Zealand and Asia, plus the best of poker from around the world.

Inside this edition:

This time of year means one thing - the World Series of Poker. And we’ve got all the big stories coming from Las Vegas. The Aussies may not have brought home a bracelet as we approach the Main Event, however there have been some close calls. We bring you the highlights and bracelet winners for the first 45 WSOP events.  The PokerNews Top 5 Moments highlights the action, including the rise of the Mizrachi brothers and the charge of the Brits.

Since the Aussies have been lacking in the bling department, we have embraced Simon Watt on our cover, the first Kiwi to win a WSOP bracelet. Watt was not only the first in his nation to win a title in the most prestigious poker series in the world, but he overcame the online phenom, Tom durrrr Dwan, on his way to victory. Dwan had ridiculous prop bets on the line to win a bracelet during the series, so Watt’s victory saved the high stakes community a massive hit. We take a look at the notion of bets being bigger than bracelets.

Online guns firing in live fields – the online kids have been busting some moves on the live arena once again, and Brendon Rubie has been the latest young gun to add a trophy to his cabinet. Rubie talks to PokerNews Australasia & Pacific about his recent win in the Melbourne Championships and the Wollongong “run good” of late. Too young to be involved in the WSOP this year, Rubie has focused back on the virtual felt, where he has wasted no time in collecting some more big scores.

One of the latest Full Tilt recruits, Van Marcus, gives us the inside story of playing against some of the best in the world in the nosebleed online cash games. Marcus also talks about his 2008 APPT Manila title and his experience last year at the WSOP. On returning to Vegas this year, Marcus is looking to improve on his impressive two final table results in 2010. After having his Ferrari stolen in May, hopefully all of the bad luck has been used up, leaving a clean run in the Main Event.

Other features from the July/August edition include the evolution of the publishing world, where poker books have moved from the technical and instructional manuals to the more personal memoirs of poker celebrities. Dr Pauly’s widely anticipated debut novel, Lost Vegas, and Tim Napper’s take on how the online young guns of today might have fared back in the old days. We also take a look at some of the finest drops to quench a thirst, in our best beers around the world feature.

While the WSOP has taken the focus at the moment, there have been some big tournaments played at home and we have all the highlights. Brendon Rubie took out the Melbourne Champs title, while Jason Gray was the winner at ANZPT Canberra. We bring you the news from the inaugural World Team Poker, where the Aussies made the final table as well as the results from the New Zealand Poker Open. Looking ahead to what is next on the poker calendar we preview Vic Champs, APPT Queenstown as well as taking a look at what is on offer at the Gold Coast during ANZPT Queensland. We also release the 2011 Aussie Millions schedule so you can plan your attack early.

Our regular features include the latest news from PokerNetwork (with the PNW Australasian rankings), our resident columnists Tony G, Joe Hachem, Grant Levy, Billy “The Croc” Argyros, Jonathan Karamalakis and mental conditioning coach Jamie Glazier. Brendan Duffy recaps all the online tournament scoops of late and in a special feature looks back on the all-time biggest Aussie online MTT scores.
